The 21st Annual Onion Creek American Legion Post 326 Memorial Golf Tournament was successfully conducted at the Onion Creek Club on May 7, 2009. 2009 Memorial Golf Tournament Winning Team L-R: Cash Mathews, David Ackel, Jackie Mills, Clyde Walls and Post Commander Don Jones, who Presented the Team Cash Prize [Return to Golf Tournament Home Page]
The net profit from this year's charity event was $24,197.
Post 326 wants to thank all tournament participants (Players, Sponsors/Contributors, and Volunteers) for making this a very successful event. Considering the state of the economy this year, we are very pleased that we exceeded our projected goal of $18,000. In spite of the economy it is reassuring to know that people and businesses are still willing to sacrifice and contribute to our event and to the projects that we are committed to support.
We had a total of 231 individuals, businesses, and organizations donate cash and/or goods and services to this year's charity event. This included a total of $14,066 in cash donations from 57 sponsors (down $6,237 from last year). In addition we received a total of $36,013 in the donation of various goods and services from 174 contributors (up $2790 from last year and an all-time high). Click here for a list of 2009 Sponsors/Contributors.
The money raised will be used to support a variety of Veterans and Community Projects over the next 12 months as determined by the Post Executive Committee including Heroes to Hometowns (H2H), Fisher House, Post Scholarship Fund, American Legion Boys/Girls State, American Legion Baseball and Others. So far the Post has awarded $17,000 in scholarships (2 ea $4,000 four year scholarships and 9 ea $1,000 merit scholarships) to deserving and qualified seniors at several local area high schools (Hays HS, Bowie HS, Akins HS and St. Michael's), awarded $3,365 in scholarships for Boys/Girls State and has made a $1,000 commitment for American Legion Baseball.
The Silent Auction, which was open to the public, was also a big success and hit an all-time high with a net profit of $8,291. The profits from the Silent Auctions have steadily grown over the years.
We had another beautiful opening ceremony for the tournament. Our ceremony included the presentation of colors by the Hays HS USMC JROTC Color Guard and the singing of the National Anthem by the Bowie HS Show Choir Trio.
We had 132 players sign-up for the tournament and they enjoyed a beautiful day of golf followed by a buffet lunch and the award of individual and team prizes. The golfers were greeted by bagpiper Ken Liechti and were treated to the music and vocals of Steve and Mary Beth Denton during the Social/Buffet.
This year we introduced a $1M Hole-in-One Shot Attempt. Raffle tickets were sold and one winner was selected to attempt to make a hole-in-one for $1M. There was not a hole-in-one but the contest provided an exciting start to the tournament. We plan to do it again next year with possibly more shot attempts.
The 22nd American Legion Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for May 6, 2010 at the Onion Creek Club. Mark your calendars!
