Post Commander Don Jones presents Cadet LTCOL Alex Young with a $4,000 scholarship at the Hays High School Marine Corps Junior ROTC awards ceremony.  Cadet Young was also awarded a Navy ROTC scholarship.  He will attend the University of Houston and be in the Navy ROTC at Rice University.  His goal is to become a Marine Officer.

Onion Creek American Legion Post 326 has historically awarded at least one $4,000, four-year academic scholarship per year; and has also awarded $1,000, one-year merit scholarships when additional funds have been available.  Graduating seniors from Akins, Bowie and Hays High Schools are currently eligible.  Applicants must also be U.S. citizens.

Selection Criteria considered: high school grade point average/class standing, personal character, extracurricular activities, professional objectives and need.  Military service by a close family member or planned military service by the applicant will also be given favorable consideration.  Selectees must enroll as a full-time student each semester at an accredited four-year college or university, and must subsequently maintain a minimum grade point average which that institution considers to be at least average (i.e., above 2.0 on a 4.0 scale).

The Post 326 Scholarship Committee accepts applications January through March each year, and interviews selectively at candidates' high schools in April.

The $4,000 scholarship will be paid at the rate of $500 per regular semester over a period of four consecutive years commencing with the fall semester.  $1,000 awards, when made, are paid at a rate of $500 per semester for one academic year.  In addition to recipients, Post 326 also selects alternates who may receive an award should additional funds become available and/or if the person(s) originally selected forfeit.  Recipients must document their academic progress following each semester by submitting a copy of their official grade report along with verification of enrollment for the upcoming semester.
